Last season’s surprise team, Brighton, has kicked off the Premier League 2023/24 season on a positive note. With a goal from Brazilian player João Pedro, Roberto De Zerbi’s team secured a convincing 4-1 victory against Luton Town at home on Saturday in the opening round of the competition.
Solly March opened the scoring for the home team in the 36th minute of the first half. All the other goals in the match were scored in the second half. João Pedro netted the second goal for Brighton from a penalty kick at the 25th-minute mark. The former Fluminense and Watford striker made his official debut for the new team.
Shortly after, at the 35th minute, Carlton Morris pulled one back for the visitors, who have returned to the English top flight after more than 30 years. Luton Town had never competed in the Premier League under the current format. Simon Adingra and Evan Ferguson sealed Brighton’s impressive victory with goals in the final minutes, making it a 4-1 win.
Brighton had its best-ever season in 2022/23, finishing in sixth place. In the upcoming round, De Zerbi’s team will face Wolverhampton away. Luton Town’s match against Burnley was postponed, and they will return to the field against Chelsea on the 25th.
