Sassuolo 0-2 Atalanta

De Ketelaere 83 (A), Zortea 93 (A)

Charles De Ketelaere makes Serie A debut memorable with first goal for Atalanta, while Nadir Zortea’s screamer adds to win against Sassuolo.

Atalanta faced setbacks ahead of their season opener, with record signing El Bilal Toure nursing a serious tendon injury, alongside absentees Hans Hateboer, Jose Luis Palomino, Michel Adopo, and the suspended Nicolò Cambiaghi. Gianluca Scamacca and Charles De Ketelaere were cautiously introduced for their debuts. On the other hand, Sassuolo had Ruan Tressoldi suspended and Agustin Alvarez injured, while Domenico Berardi was left out due to his Juventus transfer aspirations.

The visitors initiated the match with strength, as Martin Erlic cleared a Teun Koopmeiners strike almost off the line. Erlic then blocked Ademola Lookman’s shot following a Davide Zappacosta cross.

Duvan Zapata faced obstructions from Mattia Viti and Andrea Consigli before Maxime Lopez made a goal-line clearance on Zapata’s header from a corner. Sassuolo mounted counter-attacks, and Juan Musso parried away a scorcher from Matheus Henrique. After the break, Armand Lauriente attempted an audacious lob from midfield.

De Ketelaere entered for his Atalanta debut and missed a chance from close range off a Matteo Ruggeri cross. Gianluca Scamacca also joined, setting up De Ketelaere for a strike that hit the crossbar.

An acrobatic Ederson volley narrowly missed the target, but De Ketelaere secured his first Serie A goal after a quiet year at Milan. Similar to before, a Ruggeri cross and Belgian’s header, but this time goal-line technology confirmed its crossing before Consigli’s desperate save.

Musso took a risk rushing out to thwart Lauriente, and Atalanta sealed the deal in stoppage time with a low daisy-cutter by Nadir Zortea from outside the box, finding the far bottom corner.
