BUDAPEST, Hungary – The 2023 World Athletics Championships have commenced, and the first event, the 1500 meters, is completed, leaving 23,000 meters to go for Sifan Hassan. She kicked off her ambitious 1500/5k/10k triple endeavor by clinching victory in her heat during the 1500 prelims on Saturday morning. Hassan’s performance was remarkable as she surged from 9th place to take the lead in the final 400 meters, clocking a swift 59.22-second last lap. The only setback for Hassan is the reduced recovery time of 6.5 hours for the 10,000m final tonight, instead of the originally planned 7.5 hours, due to a one-hour delay in the morning session caused by rain.

In the women’s 1500 meters, American athletes Nikki Hiltz, Cory McGee, and Sinclaire Johnson all secured their spots in the next round. On the men’s side, Kenneth Rooks and Isaac Updike, who advanced after a fall, successfully qualified for the steeple final. However, Benard Keter was eliminated from the competition. Despite facing the challenge of two blood clots in his legs, world record holder Ryan Crouser also progressed to the men’s shot put final.
