In Rome, under José Mourinho (once again absent from the bench due to a suspension), AS Roma suffered a 1-2 defeat in their visit to Verona this Saturday for the 2nd round of Serie A. After drawing their home opener against Salernitana (2-2), the Portuguese coach’s team holds just one point and currently occupies the 13th place. Meanwhile, Verona has secured victories in both of their played matches.
With Rui Patrício in goal (Renato Sanches sidelined due to injury), Roma saw Verona take a 2-0 lead in the first half, with goals from Duda (4′), following an incomplete save by the Portuguese goalkeeper, and Ngonge (45+3′).
In the second half, the Roman side managed to pull one back with Aouar’s goal (56′), bringing the score to 1-2. However, the scoreboard remained unchanged, even as the home team finished the match with 10 players following Hien’s expulsion (84′).
On the other hand, Milan, with Rafael Leão in the starting lineup (substituted off in the 66th minute), triumphed at home with a 4-1 win over Torino.
Pulisic netted the opening goal (33′), and Schuurs quickly equalized for the visitors (36′). Yet, before the first half ended, Stefano Pioli’s team added two more goals through Giroud (43′), from a penalty kick, and Theo Hernández (45+2′), the latter assisted by Rafael Leão.
In the second half, Giroud scored again from the penalty spot (65′), completing his brace and sealing the final score.
With this outcome, Milan collects all six possible points (similar to Verona) and stands at the top of the table.
