Chelsea has been hit with another significant injury setback as left-back Ben Chilwell sustained a hamstring injury during their 1-0 victory over Brighton in the Carabao Cup, as confirmed by manager Mauricio Pochettino. This news was reported by the Daily Mail.
The report reveals that Chilwell had been dealing with two hamstring injuries, and it appears that he aggravated the existing issue during the match, ultimately being forced off in the final minute. Chelsea had already exhausted all their substitutions, leaving them with ten men for the remainder of the game.
Chelsea is already coping with a growing list of injuries to key first-team players, including summer signings Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia. Additionally, Reece James, Carney Chukwuemeka, Trevoh Chalobah, Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, and Marcus Bettinelli are also on the treatment table.
Nkunku and Lavia have yet to make an appearance for Chelsea this season, with Nkunku expected to return to full training in December and Lavia set to be available for selection ahead of their Premier League game against Arsenal in October.
Mauricio Pochettino expressed concern over Chilwell’s injury, stating, “Is Chilwell injured? Yes, we need to assess it tomorrow but I think it is hamstring.” Chilwell has faced ongoing injury challenges since joining Chelsea from Leicester City in 2020. Despite the setbacks, he has made 92 appearances, scored nine goals, and provided 13 assists across all competitions.
The manager will hope that Chilwell’s injury is not a severe one, considering his past struggles with hamstring issues that sidelined him for several months last season and caused him to miss the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
In the previous season, Chilwell played in 31 games, scored two goals, and contributed four assists across all competitions. This season, he has made seven appearances, providing one assist, with most of his appearances coming as a substitute.
Chelsea, which has faced a challenging start to the new campaign, will look to build on their victory over Brighton as they prepare to face Fulham at Craven Cottage in an upcoming league match on Monday night.
