FC Porto has clinched the national roller hockey championship, securing the club’s 25th title in the sport with an exciting 3-1 victory over Benfica on Wednesday. This victory marks Benfica’s first defeat in this final and Porto’s first win at their rival’s home since April 2023.
A Decisive Triumph
The match, which started at 6 PM, was characterized by few fouls and a strategic approach by the Dragons to contain the Eagles’ dominance. The game was highlighted by the stellar performance of goalkeeper Xavi Malián, who played a crucial role in stopping the efforts of Nicolía and Nil Roca, keeping Porto in contention.
Ten minutes before halftime, FC Porto began to assert its strength. Ezequiel Mena and Carlo Di Benedetto pressured goalkeeper Pedro Henriques until Di Benedetto broke the deadlock with a cross-shot goal. Although Benfica scored shortly after through Roberto Di Benedetto, the goal was disallowed due to an infringement.
Until halftime, Benfica could only threaten to equalize in the last seconds, but Malián continued to shine between the posts.
A Second Half Full of Emotion and Glory
In the second half, FC Porto returned with full force. Carlo Di Benedetto doubled the lead two minutes in, and soon after, Ezequiel Mena scored the third goal, celebrating with the Porto fans in the stands.
Despite Benfica’s efforts, Roberto Di Benedetto managed to reduce the deficit with a solo goal from the left side, leaving 19:50 minutes for the final buzzer. However, Benfica lacked the ingenuity to further reduce the gap, largely due to Malián’s excellent goalkeeping. Malián’s performances were crucial in keeping Porto “alive” in various moments of the finals.
Porto’s Dominance and Individual Highlights
Following their home victories (5-3 and 4-1) and despite a defeat in Lisbon (5-2), the Dragons extended their dominance to the capital, securing their 25th championship.
Under the leadership of Ricardo Ares, FC Porto reclaimed the throne, a year after Benfica celebrated the title. Carlo Di Benedetto was the top scorer for FC Porto in this final, with six goals. Throughout the league, the French player scored a total of 39 goals.
However, the top scorer crown belongs to Gonçalo Alves, who registered 47 goals in 35 games.
On the Benfica side, Nicolía’s four goals were not enough to overcome the defensive prowess of Xavi Malián, an authentic wall in goal.
Celebrations and Looking Forward
With this victory, FC Porto adds the league title to their Portuguese Cup win. For coach Ricardo Ares, 48, this marks his second double, following the one achieved in the 2021/22 season.
Amid celebrations, Ares did not forget André Villas-Boas: “In these last weeks, he was with us and helped with important aspects. May this be the first of many titles.”
