Eddie Howe, the head coach of Newcastle, continues to hold a strong interest in Carlos Alcaraz, a 20-year-old midfielder from Southampton. According to sources at FootballTransfers, discussions were initiated between Newcastle and the player during the summer transfer window.

Carlos Alcaraz was on Eddie Howe’s radar during the previous transfer window, and notable European clubs such as Benfica and AC Milan were also in talks with the talented midfielder, expressing a keen and long-standing interest in his services.

Newcastle made an initial approach to Alcaraz’s representatives; however, they were ultimately discouraged by Southampton’s substantial £30 million valuation of the player. Nevertheless, there is optimism that Newcastle may revisit the possibility of signing him during the upcoming January transfer window.

Carlos Alcaraz made a strong impression on the Newcastle head coach when he played as part of a left-sided midfield trio during Southampton’s 2-1 loss to Newcastle at St James’ Park in January. He further showcased his abilities when he played as an inside forward during Southampton’s 3-1 defeat to Newcastle in April in the northeast.

Alcaraz made his move to Southampton in January, transferring from Racing Club for a fee of £12 million. During his debut season with the club, he featured in 18 Premier League matches, contributing four goals and two assists.

In the current campaign, Alcaraz has participated in six Championship games for Southampton. However, the team has faced difficulties this season, currently occupying 15th place in the Championship table.

Carlos Alcaraz initially rose to prominence in Argentina, making his debut for Racing Club at the age of 17 in 2020. He went on to make 83 appearances for the club and played a pivotal role in their runner-up finish in the Primera Division last year.

Expressing his enthusiasm upon joining Southampton earlier this month, Alcaraz said, “I’m very happy to be a part of this club. I recognized that this would be a new challenge for my career, and I eagerly embraced it, fully aware that I was joining a prestigious club. I am eagerly anticipating the start of training and playing matches, and I am fully committed to giving my all for this club and its colors. I am looking forward to meeting my teammates and giving my best effort.”
