Fernando Alonso says his Aston Martin is ‘too good to be true’

Fernando Alonso hailed the performance of his Aston Martin as “too good to be true” after qualifying fifth for his first race with the team at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. The double Formula One world champion and veteran of 355 races was also fastest in second practice on Friday and Saturday’s final session. The Spaniard, now 41, joined Aston Martin from Renault-owned Alpine at the end of last season when five-times champion Sebastian Vettel retired. “The whole weekend has been unreal for us,” Alonso told reporters after a floodlit qualifying that saw Red Bull sweep the front row, with champion Max Verstappen on pole, and Ferrari fill the second row. “It was like too good to be true every session and every performance of the car. “Now there is not much more to dow...

FP3: Alonso tops final practice as Mercedes picks up pace

Following his strong showing on Friday, Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso continues to live up to the hype around him as he finishes top of the timesheet with the Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez finishing P2 and P3 respectively. With the third and final practice taking place in daylight, the majority of teams took it easy at the start of the 60-minute session, staying in the garage for the opening minutes. Most of the drivers concentrated on the soft tyres in the session, trying to save the medium and the hard compound for the race as the C3 compound has proved a good compound for a one-lap qualifying run, but not for a race run. Fernando Alonso led the way following the first runs and the Spaniard was able to improve his best time with his second fresh set of C3s, set...

Fernado Alonso quicker than Verstappen and Perez in Bahrain FP2

As the Aston Martin threat seems to become more and more reality, Fernando Alonso ended up faster in second practice at Bahrain. World Champion Max Verstappen was a close second fastest with his Red Bull teammate Perez third. Second practice at Bahrain is always an important session as it provides cooler conditions compared to first practice and is importantly scheduled at similar times as qualifying and the race. Alonso made perfect use of it and further warned his rivals even though his 1:30.907 is still 6 tenths away from the best time that Perez recorded in pre-season testing one week earlier. Alonso did two qualifying runs on the soft tyre and headed the session while Verstappen complained about the bumps at Sakhir International Circuit, additionally saying that his RB19 was jumping...

Aston Martin launch 2023 F1 car

Aston Martin became the seventh F1 team to launch their 2023 car, as the Silverstone team continue with their British racing green livery for their third season since Lawrence Stroll rebranded Racing Point. The team have worked hard on upgrading their infrastructure, building a new smart factory and wind tunnel, though that won’t have too much impact on the car that takes the track for preseason testing in Bahrain. It wasn’t quite the extravaganza that Aston Martin put on in 2020 which featured Daniel Craig, but the team members that did speak stressed they were confident that 2023 will be the turning point for the team. One of those was Fernando Alonso, who shocked the F1 world when he announced his switch from Alpine to Aston Martin, the seventh team change of his career. The Spania...
